The Oregon State Hospital has many levels of care, and mental health therapists are present at every single one of them. This may be in the admission unit where patients are first brought into the hospital all the way to transition units with patients who are ready to be discharged. No matter what unit they are assigned to, MHTs assist with the basic treatment of patients, and lead classes that further a patient's recovery. The interactions with the patients, no matter how small, can make a huge impact on the patients stay at the hospital.

Mental Health Therapists are part of a larger interdisciplinary team consisting of psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other therapists. The members of this team collaborated on the treatment plan for each individual patient. Within this team, the Mental Health Therapists provide the most personal information about the patient because they develop a professional intimacy with the patients and become wholly invested in their well-being. They know what their hobbies are, what their triggers are, and what their goals are. Using this insight, they can help patients work on relapse prevention skills so patients can be an active participant in their own recovery.
