Get ready, gamers! 🎮 In DND World Weavers with Alex and Jamie, Episode 49: Welcome to Ravenloft, TSR module I6, your Hype Host Alex and Expert Host Jamie kick off an epic journey into the chilling world of Ravenloft. 🦇 Beginning with a nostalgic hook about a scary movie night 👻, this episode marks the start of a deep dive into Ravenloft, a campaign anticipated to last until the end of the year 🗓️, far beyond just Halloween. First published in 1983 as TSR module I6, the hosts are primarily exploring the 25th-anniversary edition, also known as the "silver book," updated for AD&D 2nd edition 📚, noting only minor changes from the original. This initial episode promises to pick and choose the best materials from the extensive Ravenloft lore, setting the stage for months of gothic horror adventure! 🏰
At the heart of Ravenloft lies the ominous domain of Barovia, shrouded in deadly mists that trap unfortunate travelers, ruled by the ancient and terrifying Count Strahd Von Zarovich 🧛♂️. Strahd is depicted as a 16th-Level Necromancer of Lawful Evil alignment 😈, possessing an impressive array of special attacks like energy drain ✨, a charm person gaze, and the ability to shapechange into a wolf or bat, or summon various creatures such as rats, wolves, and bats. His defenses are formidable 💪, including immunity to sleep, charm, hold, and mind-affecting spells, regeneration, and requiring +2 or better weapons to hit 🛡️. However, he also has critical weaknesses to holy symbols, sunlight ☀️, holy water, and running water. Strahd is a genius 🧠, preferring a psychological game of cat and mouse, more interested in scaring player characters than immediately destroying them—a critical weakness that offers a fighting chance! His primary goal is to possess Ireena Kolyana, believing her to be the reincarnation of his beloved Tatyana, and he also actively seeks powerful artifacts like the Sunsword. ⚔️
The adventure itself is enriched by unique gameplay elements, most notably the Vistani card reading performed by Madame Eva 🃏, which dynamically determines Strahd's specific goals and the placement of important treasures, adding immense replayability! Players navigating Barovia will encounter terrifying wandering creatures day and night 🐺🧟, including dire wolves, zombies, wights, wraiths, and even other vampires, each posing a distinct threat. The infamous Castle Ravenloft is a sinkhole of evil, where attempts to turn undead and make fear checks suffer penalties, and the castle is riddled with traps and powerful guardians, like the Guardian of Sorrow and monstrous melds crafted by Strahd's necromantic experiments. Maintaining awareness of the time of day is crucial ⏰, as Strahd is helpless during daylight hours but becomes a relentless force after sundown. 🌙
