NB.

. Tongogara was the Commander of ZANLA (Zimbabwe African Nationalist Liberation Army), the military wing of ZANU, the organisation led by Prime Minster Robert Mugabe and Moyo was the second Vice President of ZAPU, the organisation led by Joshua Nkomo, the Minister of Home Affairs.

. Tongogara had died in a highway accident in Mozambique in December 1979, while Moyo had been assassinated in Lusaka, Zambia in January 1977.

. Both men were buried on a hill overlooking the capital city Salisbury (renamed Harare in 1982) which was selected as a war memorial dedicated to those who died in the nationalist cause.

. The funeral was designed to attempt to foster unity between the guerrillas of ZANU and ZAPU as tribally-motivated tensions developed between both parties despite the effort to integrate both into a new national army for the newly constituted Zimbabwean state.
