The bitter history of Sugar.
The first chemically refined sugar appeared in India about 2,500 years ago. From there, the technique spread east towards China, and west towards Persia and the early Islamic worlds, eventually reaching the Mediterranean in the 13th century. Sugar is one of the most used products in today’s world. But, its sweetness is filled with blood, oppression and political changes. One of the sought-after products that fed the slave trade was sugar. Overall, of the approximately 12.5 million people who were kidnapped in Africa and survived their transport across the Atlantic, nearly two-thirds ended up on sugar plantations. The most infamous case of political change was Cuba, where the US intervened against Spain only because of Sugar.
