Nobody Expected this india`s HUGE Gold Reserve in ocean 😲😲😲The government of India has signed a new 15-year contract with the ISA granting exclusive rights to explore polymetallic sulphides (PMS) in a designated area of the Carlsberg Ridge in the Indian Ocean. With this step, India becomes the first country to hold two separate ISA contracts for PMS exploration, and now holds the largest exploration area allocated by ISA for PMS globally.

The minerals targeted—polymetallic sulphides—are formed around hydrothermal vents and contain valuable metals like copper, zinc, gold and silver, which are critical for technologies such as batteries, electronics and the clean energy transition.

India’s motive is clear: to build its capacity in deep-sea exploration and reduce dependence on imported critical minerals, while advancing its maritime science and ocean-economy goals.

On the regulatory front, the contract is for exploration only. Commercial mining (extraction at full scale) is still subject to ISA’s finalisation of rules and regulations, and all associated environmental and technological safeguards. India is also preparing its scientific and technical infrastructure for deep-ocean work under its broader ocean mission.

Finally, it should be noted that this is a step forward—but not the end: actual mining operations are still some years away, given the need for robust regulation, environmental assessment, and technology readiness.
