In a major breakthrough amid the Centre’s March 31 deadline to eliminate Naxalism, Telangana is poised to move closer to becoming a Maoist-free state.

In a sensational operation, the Telangana Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) has taken Central Maoist Party Secretary Devuji alias Tippiri Tirupati into custody. A native of Peddapalli district, Devuji was elevated as Secretary General after the encounter of Nambala Keshava Rao.

Devuji and Politburo member Malla Raji Reddy were apprehended in the forests of Asifabad by Telangana SIB. Reports suggest that along with Devuji, 16 Maoists from the Telangana region are preparing to surrender.

Another senior Maoist leader, Ganapathi, is said to have left the country due to ill health.

Telangana DGP Shivdhar Reddy confirmed that Devuji and Malla Raji Reddy will be produced before the media within two days.

The development comes shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated that Naxalism would be eliminated from the country by March 31 — marking a decisive phase in India’s anti-Naxal operations.
