More than 250,000 people acquired Spanish
nationality in 2024, half of them South Americans.
A total of 252,476 people acquired Spanish nationality in 2024 , 5.1% more than the previous year, and the main countries of origin were Morocco (42,910), Venezuela (35,403) and Colombia (26,224), according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) collected by EFE.The INE (National Institute of Statistics and Census) published this Thursday the "Statistics on the Acquisition of Spanish Nationality by Residents. Year 2024," which shows the highest rate of acquisition of Spanish nationality in the historical series , which began to be compiled in 2013. In 2024, more female residents obtained nationality, 56% of the total, compared to 44% of men . The average acquisition time was five years. By age , the largest group was in the 30-39 age range, followed by the 40-49 age group.This statistic indicates that Catalonia and the Community of Madrid were the territories where the highest number of acquisitions were recorded (68,755 and 48,288, respectively, 46% of the total), while Extremadura (1,459) and La Rioja (1,729) where the lowest. Among them, the Valencian Community (26,729), Andalusia (23,157), the Basque Country (13,600), the Canary Islands (10,307), Murcia (9,738), the Balearic Islands (9,366), Aragon (8,340), Castilla-La Mancha (8,051), Castilla y León (6,682), Galicia (6,667), Navarre (4,311), Asturias (2,550) and Cantabria (1,789).The vast majority of nationality acquisitions were by residence , 85% with 215,734 cases, while 14.4% were by choice (mainly people under 20 years of age who are or have been subject to the parental authority of a Spaniard, or whose father or mother was Spanish and was born in Spain).
