We all deal with the toilet on a daily basis, often more than once a day, yet we rarely take the time to think about the invention of the toilet, how it began, how humans used to relieve themselves before its invention, and how such an innovation has benefited all of humanity, which we now take for granted.

The toilet in its current form, which uses flowing water to dispose of waste, was not invented until the late 15th century, but it was not widely used until more than two centuries later. Before the invention of the toilet in this form, people disposed of their waste in primitive ways.

Ordinary people resorted either to the open air where no one was around or to designated buckets and pits dug next to their homes, which were emptied and cleaned periodically. In castles and palaces, closed rooms were designated to provide privacy for individuals while relieving themselves, and these rooms were often located at the edges of the castle, containing a hole over which the person would sit, allowing waste to drop down.

The toilet gradually evolved with the passage of time and the development of human thought, but this evolution was not solely for the sake of providing privacy in its general sense, nor merely to facilitate the frequent act of relieving oneself daily. In reality, it saved humanity from diseases and moved it to a safer and more stable environment, allowing for the significant progress we have achieved today.

So how did the chair that disposes of waste using water flow technology accomplish all of this? As mentioned earlier, some people's task was to dispose of waste and clean the area periodically, and this task allowed for the transfer of worms that breed in human waste to humans themselves, transmitting infectious and deadly diseases. Additionally, the accumulation of waste in the open for some time attracts a certain type of fly that breeds on this waste, causing blindness in humans when it moves from the waste to come into

contact with their skin and eyes.

Even if a person disposes of their waste in flowing water like rivers and oceans, this is not healthy either. Countries that cannot provide advanced toilets and sewage systems certainly do not purify water before use, and as a result, people end up drinking and eating food contaminated with their own waste that they disposed of in the water.

The issue goes beyond merely avoiding diseases; the invention of the modern toilet has contributed to the safety of women around the world. In the past, women had to leave their homes and go to the outdoors to relieve themselves, being alone, vulnerable, and exposed, which put them at risk.

According to the website "Ratemytoilet," over 3 billion people around the world do not have a toilet; in fact, many have never even seen one before. They still dispose of their waste in the same ways humans have for centuries, without receiving any of the advancements that have become outdated for us.

The site adds that countries with the lowest rates of toilet ownership are also among the poorest and have the highest child mortality rates for those under five years old. It suggests that organizations fighting poverty in developing countries should focus on building toilets and sewage systems instead of solely concentrating on providing food and medicine, emphasizing that establishing a good sewage network is the first step in breaking the cycle of poverty and death that plagues these nations.

However, before the advent of indoor sewage systems, toilets were simply stone or wooden structures with chutes that transferred waste to drains in the streets.

The modern design of toilets began to emerge when advanced sewage systems became a standard practice in Victorian Britain, where household sewage was connected to public drains, despite the fact that the technology itself is nearly 500 years old.

Sir John Harington invented the first flush toilet in 1596, while engineer Thomas Crapper developed a modified version in the 1860s. No wonder that the restroom is still sometimes colloquially referred to as "the john" in Britain.

However, the full history of the toilet's inventor is even more surprising. Initially, toilets were a luxurious means available only to members of the upper class. Ancient records dating back to 2800 BCE indicate that only the wealthy of the Mohenjo-Daro settlement in the Indus Valley civilization had wooden seats reinforced with brick, featuring a sloped channel leading to public drains in the streets.
