STORYLINE:
Every summer, the town of Guca in Serbia hosts an amazing and utterly unique brass festival in which as many as forty brass bands compete for the coveted prize of the Golden Trumpet.
The festival attracts crowds of 300,000 and seals the fortunes of the winners - at least until the next competition comes around - because the best are in huge demand to play at the biggest weddings and other major celebrations.
For four days, visitors drink large amounts of alcohol, eat spit-roasted lamb and pig and dance around and on their tables, as some 40 blaring brass bands wring chaos on the town until the small hours.
Often several brass bands in close proximity play different songs simultaneously in tent-shaded eating areas, competing for the attention and tips of diners.
The highlight of the festival is the competition of its final day, Sunday, when 20 bands, all finalists from contests around the country, face off for the Golden Trumpet award, the highest prize.
The day begins with the parade when bands march through the town, playing the songs to wake up the residents.
After a parade, the contest begins with the firing of a cannon as all of orchestras, some 180 brass musicians play the same song at once.
The brass-band music is Serbian tradition, born of a culture that has spent almost its entire existence at war or in subjugation.
The music began in 1804, when the trumpet first came to Serbia during the uprising against the Ottoman Turks.
Though it was a military instrument to wake and gather soldiers and announce battles, the trumpet took the entertaining role as soldiers used it to transpose popular folk songs.
When war ended and they returned to their homes, the music entered civilian life.
The annual Guca festival, in its 42nd year, involves four days full of good brass music and Serbian national cuisine in a big open-air party with more than 300,000 visitors.
