 Stranger Things has smashed a box office record previously set by KPop Demon Hunters. The 1980s-set sci-fi fantasy series, which debuted in 2016 and just concluded with its season 5 finale, is one of Netflix's most popular original series ever. In fact, season 4 is their third most-watched English language season ever, behind the limited series Adolescence and season 1 of Wednesday.  In an unusual move for the streaming service, the Stranger Things finale played in theaters. Its brief run kicked off on New Year's Eve at the same time it debuted on Netflix. However,  Per Variety, Stranger Things has earned between $25 and $28 million in concessions sales during its brief theatrical run. The exact number is not yet known, because different theater chains set wildly different price points for concessions vouchers. However, it is known that at least 1.1 million vouchers were sold.  While most concessions vouchers were sold at around $20, Regal Cinemas and others sold them at a price point of $11 in honor of Millie Bobby Brown's Stranger Things character, Eleven.  The reason that the release's success is being measured in concessions rather than ticket sales is the fact that stipulations about residuals in the contracts of the Stranger Things cast meant that Netflix could not allow theaters to sell tickets. Instead, seats were reserved with "concessions vouchers." Because of this, all the money involved goes directly to the exhibitors rather than Netflix.  Because of this workaround, the Stranger Things finale's theatrical performance can't be directly compared to that of Netflix's 2025 smash hit KPop Demon Hunters, which grossed nearly $25 million in theaters worldwide during two nonconsecutive weekends and remains Netflix's highest-grossing release at the domestic box office.  However, the Stranger Things finale sold more in concessions than the James Cameron blockbuster Avatar: Fire and Ash. The movie, which debuted at No. 1 on the weekend before Christmas and maintained its position during its sophomore weekend, is expected to top the charts again this weekend and recently passed the $850 million milestone worldwide.  However, per Deadline, on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, during the same sp
