Newly Discovered HUD Proposal Drafts Would Allow Public Housing authorities and private landlords to impose a required 40-hour week and limit assistance to as little as two years for able-bodied adults aged 18 to 61.

Drafts of a new rule from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (#HUD), titled Establishing Flexibility for Implementation of Work Requirements and Term Limits, would allow local housing authorities and private landlords to impose a required work week of up to 40 hours for able bodied adults aged 18 to 61 and limit assistance to as little as two years.
Additionally, the new rules would remove families receiving rental assistance if one household member is in the country illegally.

After the time limit, residents would lose their assistance.

The new requirements could be applied to recipients of major federal housing programs, including public housing, Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8), Project-Based Vouchers, and Project-Based Rental Assistance.
Work hours: The draft indicates requirements could be as high as 40 hours of work per week.
Time limits: Rental assistance could be limited to as little as two years for some recipients.
Exemptions: Exempt categories for work requirements would likely include the elderly, disabled, primary caretakers of very young children, and college students. 

The proposals of the 56 page proposal are not yet official but align with calls from the Trump administration for increased self-sufficiency among aid recipients. Once the proposals become officially published or implemented, all rules and regulations would be subject to a public comment period before being finalized.
