The Great Himalayan Exploration: Teesta River Devastation | Witness the Impact | Episode 2
Teesta River is a 414 km long river that rises in the Pauhunri Mountain of eastern Himalayas, flows through the Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal and subsequently enters Bangladesh through Rangpur division.
The Teesta River has caused devastation in several ways, including:
Flash floods
In 2023, the Teesta River experienced flash floods that caused water levels to rise up to 20 feet, resulting in widespread damage. This was the deadliest flood in the area since 1968, when around 1,000 people died.
Landslides
In August 2024, a major landslide destroyed the Teesta-V hydropower station in Sikkim, India. The station was under restoration after a glacial outburst in October of the previous year.
Flooding in Teesta Bazar
Heavy rains caused the Teesta River to swell, damaging private properties and National Highway roads in Teesta Bazar, West Bengal.
Buried arable land
In the Teesta shoal region, recent floods buried large areas of arable land in sand.
Some say that the Himalayan ecosystem is the most fragile in the world, and that any disruption will have a negative impact on the people of the region.
Royal Enfield and UNESCO are collaborating on a multi-year project to document and promote India's Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH):
The Great Himalayan Exploration
A multi-year project that began in 2022 in the Eastern Himalayas. Royal Enfield rider-researchers travel on-road to document and preserve ICH practices. The project aims to identify and document 200 ICH practices across the Himalayan region.
Community engagement
The project aims to create a platform for Himalayan communities to share their stories and create a repository for their living legacies.
Sustainable tourism
The project aims to promote sustainable tourism and build resilient communities.
Responsible travel practices
The project aims to encourage riders and travelers to adopt responsible travel practices.
UNESCO and Royal Enfield announce the Great Himalayan ...
UNESCO defines ICH as the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, and skills that communities, groups, and individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage.
