Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Customize Your Excel Toolbars: Adding Icons, Copying Button Images, and More!

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this video, we will be discussing how to customize your toolbars in Excel. Last week, we learned how to turn off Adaptive Menus by going to Tools, Customize. Now, we will dive deeper into the Customize dialog box and explore the various options available to us.

When you open the Customize dialog box, you will see two dozen categories on the left hand side and dozens of commands on the right hand side for each category. For example, if you choose the Edit category, you will see icons for various commands such as Paste Values. You can easily add these icons to your toolbar by simply dragging and dropping them onto the toolbar while the Customize dialog box is open.

There are countless cool icons that you can add to your toolbars to make your Excel experience more efficient. One icon that I always have on my toolbar is the Close icon. However, in Excel, the Close icon only comes with the word "Close" and not the actual icon. But, did you know that you can copy the button image from another Microsoft program, such as Word, and paste it onto your Excel toolbar? This is a great way to customize your toolbar and make it more user-friendly.

To further customize your toolbar, you can also choose to display only the icon or both the icon and the text for certain buttons. For example, if you often forget what the Format Painter button does, you can right click on it and choose to display both the image and text. This will help you remember the function of the button and make your Excel experience smoother.

Remember, all of these changes can only be made while the Customize dialog box is open. Once you close it, the toolbar becomes locked and you will not be able to make any changes. So, take some time to explore the various options and customize your toolbars to fit your needs.
