The San Antonio Spurs are suddenly NBA championship contenders and Victor Wembanyama is the main reason why. After the Spurs 25-point comeback against the Clippers, it also became quite clear that the San Antonio Spurs isn't just all Wemby and the Spurs might actually have a better blueprint to win the NBA title this season. Over the past 20 years, only the 2008 Celtics, the 2020 Lakers and the 2022 Warriors have won an NBA championship after missing the playoffs the season before. Now, all those teams had veterans and multiple stars but none of them have a massive game-changer like Victor Wembanyama. Wemby is having an insane MVP season and has put the Spurs right within arms reach of the top seed in the Western Conference as they are just 3 games behind the OKC Thunder. Coincidentally, the Spurs have actually won all but one of their games this year against both the Detroit Pistons and the OKC Thunder, the two best teams in the NBA.

The Spurs have obviously been fueled by Wembanyama and his unreal dimensions, but they also have such a strong backcourt to support Wemby with De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Devin Vassell, while role players such as Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, and Luke Kornet and Carter Bryant all play their part in the Spurs system. During the preseason, many had concerns about the Spurs logjam in the backcourt but now the Spurs feature a starting five with three guards in Fox Castle and Vassell and because of that, San Antonio have one of the best lineups in the entire NBA. The question is, can the Spurs prove that they can overcome their inexperience and defeat teams like the OKC Thunder, Denver Nuggets, or Houston Rockets in the playoffs?
