Cheesman Park is among the oldest residential neighborhoods in the city dating back to 1869. By 1915, the residential areas of Cheesman Park were largely developed with distinctive homes enjoyed by Denver’s wealthiest families. The residential historic districts of Humboldt Island, Wyman’s, and Morgan’s Addition provide testimonials to these times of grandeur. The park was named in honor of Walter Cheesman following the donation of money for the construction of the pavilion on the east side of the park. The 1960’s ushered in “urbanization” and the construction of mid-rise and high-rise condominium buildings around the perimeter of Cheesman Park.
Today, the Cheesman Park neighborhood remains popular for its proximity to LoDo, Uptown, and Downtown. Escaping from “the city” means walking the turn-of-the-century park and its pavilion and exhaling your stress as it seems you have stepped into another time and place. It is easy to imagine when Cheesman Park was the eastern rural edge of the City of Denver. Enjoy the old growth trees and the sense of history.
