THE ROLLING STONES
Their Satanic Majesties Edited Outtakes

« PART JAM »
(Jagger/Richards)
Recorded at Olympic Studio, London, July 1967.
I edited this track from "Part Jam" takes 1 to 5, included in "The Complete Their Satanic Majesties Request Session 8 CD Box." The was no complete version of this track, just several part played in different style. I thought it was possible to reunite all of them in order to have a progressive song like 2000 Man, for instance.

------------
I've always been fascinated by Rolling Stones' "Their Satanic Majesties Request", not only the original album, but also all the unfinished songs that can be heard in the bootlegs of the summer 1967 sessions, in Olympic Studios. If the album use to be seen like a response of the Stones to "Sergeant Pepper" (failed response according to the press of yesterday and today, brilliant response in my opinion), the unreleased tracks take us more towards an intimate pop that is sometimes reminiscent of The Kinks.

Among these projects of songs, all remained instrumental and of course totally unknown, there are brilliant ideas, an incredible osmosis between a very delicate Keith Richards songwriting and Nicky Hopkins already at the top (the pianist of genius who will make so much for the sound of the band and for most of the big English bands of the time). But also a Bill Wyman experimenter ("Acid in the Garden", kind of pre-version of "In Another Land") or funky like in soundtrack of an Italian film ("Soul Blues"). And there is too some amazing hendrixian incursions (the very psyche "Blues") or pre-punk and pre-indie (the avant-garde "Jam One").

However, these new titles had always been for me a big reason for frustration ... For each of them, almost never real complete take. It was mostly parts, played and replayed according to different styles or tempos, sometimes with great moments, sometimes a stammering or more assertive structure, but also with errors, interruptions, reboots... So I tried here to edit all these ideas, sometimes compiling the best of each shot ("Jam One", "Blues", "Soul Blues"); other times by correcting the tempo variations ("Gold Painted Nails"); at other times again by editing what seemed to be a progressive song like "2000 Man" ("Part Jam" and its theme played differently on each of its take of less than a minute). Or simply by removing the most obvious errors ("Organ Part") or by looking for a more pop format in terms of duration ("Honky Tonk Majesties").

In short, here is an attempt to dream what could have become a sequel to "Satanic Majesties Request", before the Stones decided otherwise with the release of "Jumping Jack Flash".

Everything is listening here, but if you have time for only one song, I recommend the fifth, "Part Jam", probably the most unusual of all so the initial shots were mere snippets. The most mysterious too. Enjoy!
