My first encounter with Battleship Island — or Hashima, as it’s officially called — was through a photograph. From a distance, it looked like a massive warship rising out of the sea, but the closer I looked, the stranger it became.

Crumbling high-rises, broken windows, and not a soul in sight. It felt less like a real place and more like the set of a zombie apocalypse movie — minus the zombies, hopefully.

What shocked me most was learning that this abandoned ruin was once the most densely populated spot on Earth. Thousands of people lived here, packed into concrete blocks on a speck of rock in the middle of the ocean. No trees, no soil, no escape — just coal, the resource that built and doomed this island.

Why did anyone choose to live here? How did a booming mining town collapse into silence?
