Durga Puja is one of the most important Hindu festivals celebrated mainly in West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Bihar, and Tripura. The festival honors Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. It usually takes place in the month of Ashwi (September–October) according to the Hindu calendar. The celebration lasts for ten days, with the last five days being the most significant. During Durga Puja, beautifully crafted idols of Goddess Durga are installed in elaborately decorated pandals. Each pandal is uniquely designed, often based on cultural, historical, or artistic themes. The festival begins with Mahalaya, when devotees invoke Goddess Durga and listen to sacred hymns. Traditional rituals like pushpanjali, aarti, and sandhi puja are performed with great devotion. People dress up in new clothes and visit different pandals with their families and friends.
Cultural programs, including dance, music, and drama, are organized during the evenings. Delicious traditional foods such as khichuri, luchi, alur dom, and sweets are served in community feasts. Dhunuchi dance, performed with incense burners in front of the Goddess, is a highlight of the celebrations.
The sound of dhak (traditional drums) fills the air, creating a festive atmosphere. On Ashtami, the Kumari Puja is performed, where a young girl is worshipped as a living form of the Goddess.
Families and communities come together, strengthening social and cultural bonds.
On Vijayadashami (Dashami), the idols of Goddess Durga are immersed in rivers or lakes with grand processions. Women perform sindoor khela, where they smear vermilion on each other as part of the farewell ritual.The immersion ceremony, known as visarjan, marks the end of the festival with chants of “Asche Bochor Abar Hobe” (It will happen again next year). Durga Puja is not only a religious occasion but also a cultural celebration filled with joy and togetherness. The festival leaves behind a spirit of hope, unity, and the belief that good always prevails over evil.
