San Luis Peak-Summer Hike from Stewart Creek Trailhead to San Luis Peak in the La Garita Wilderness

Join me on a hike in the remote La Garita Wilderness of Southern Colorado. This was my first time in the area and it was by far the most remote place in Colorado that I have been. The night before the hike, I was literally the only person around the trailhead.

I started the hike in the dark around 4am. Along the way I ran into glowing eyes in the woods and had a stand-off with a creature for probably 20 minutes or so. I never did figure out what it was, but it wasn't going to move. I eventually just kept going.

On my way back, I spotted a cow and calf moose lounging in the willows off to the side of the trail. It was a fairly close encounter, but they didn't seem bothered. Overall, this was a true wilderness adventure with as much solitude as one ask for.
