What made The Astonishing X-Men so great?

The Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon & John Cassaday was often regarded as one of the best titles for new readers and old looking to start in the mutant side of the Marvel Universe. But in recent years, with personal controversies coming to light, the narrative has changed, but is it valid?

Today I review the full 2004 run in its beautiful omnibus to see if it is still one of the best X-Men stories.
