When Does “Historical Style” Get Weird?

At what point does taking cues from the past go too far when designing your kilt outfit?
Is it okay to wear an 18th century coat with your modern tailored kilt?
What about the opposite? Do we, as kilt wearers, ever get too hung up on strictly following tradition and thus leave no room for new fashion ideas?

The truth is of course somewhere in between. Highland dress is a traditional national dress and therefore should not be expected to change a lot over time. However, Highland dress is also a broad topic; fashion with a spectrum of options. Erik and Rocky discuss finding the right balance.
