The Boxer Uprising – The Chinese Revolt against Foreign Invasion

The Boxer Rebellion occurred in China between 1899 and 1901, motivated by resentment against foreign presence and the influence of Christianity. The Boxers, members of the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists, believed they had supernatural powers. The rebellion culminated in a siege of foreigners in Beijing, which was broken by international forces. After the Boxers' defeat, China was forced to sign the Boxer Protocol, resulting in large indemnities and national humiliation, fueling anti-imperialist sentiment that led to the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911.
