In November 1984, Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)” dethroned Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You” to take the Number 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was a bold fusion of soul, reggae, R&B, and pop unlike anything that had been heard before on Top 40 radio, and the singer followed it up with several more hits like “Loverboy,” “Suddenly,” and “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going.”

But just as MTV and music lovers across America were finally ready to embrace Billy as a superstar, around the time that 1988’s “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car” hit Number 1 and appeared in the teen comedy film License to Drive, he completely vanished.
