The history of South Korea and North Korea before 1945 is the same. South Korea and North Korea were divided in 1945 after the end of World War II. After Japan's defeat, the Korean Peninsula was occupied by the Soviet Union in the north and the United States in the south, based on 38 degrees north latitude, resulting in the division of North and South Korea. In 1948, the division became official with the establishment of the Republic of Korea in South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in North Korea.
