10th June 2023 - Torrential Downpours around Cheshire and Shropshire

A trough over the Bay of Biscay and high pressure over the North Sea and Scandinavia was drawing up a hot, humid but capped airmass from the southeast. Thunderstorms were expected to break out across western areas if temperatures could exceed 27c, and this seemed very likely. Further east this cap was stronger and so thunderstorms were less likely, despite temperatures exceeding 30c.

I had high hopes for the day ahead and indeed finding the storms did not pose a problem. However, I struggled to get into the best position for seeing them and a last minute northward turn of the storm I was watching would ultimately place me behind it and amongst torrential rain and flooding. A lapse of judgement then made me take a wrong turn at a vital point, meaning the best storms escaped to my north.
