This is an ion chamber dosimeter which features very low to very high dose rate measurements. If I was stuck choosing one piece of equipment after a nuclear war to use for various purposes, I’d take this over a Geiger counter any day of the week.

Best features:

-range; it picks up barely above background to 50R/hour

-the sliding window allowing you to measure combined beta/gamma doses.

-fast determination of dose

-zeroing dial on the meter face

-built in light

Worst features:

-extreme sensitivity to moisture

-permanently installed batteries for bias current; virtually impossible to replace unless you’re a genius at soldering

-once the chamber bias batteries dip below 2.7 volts, the unit can’t pass calibration (although it will still work)

-surplus/scrapped units are often deceptively sold as working on eBay just because they passed battery check

I no longer have access to an ISO lab or multi-Curie sources to test the high range, but soon as I do, I’ll update the video. Be careful when buying these used. If the person selling it doesn’t at least check the internal batteries with a multimeter, expect a broken unit but hope for the best.

I purchased this one in either 2013 or 2014 for $400 from a reputable used HP equipment dealer who did a full range calibration, after the state using it upgraded.
