This paper provides an in-depth examination of the origins of the first Brazilian horse breed, often known as Northeastern Horse (Cavalo Nordestino – in Portuguese). The examination outlined in this manuscript considers historical components, including firsthand testimonies, ancient records, colonial documents, and contemporary understanding of equine genetics to ascertain the origins of this native Brazilian breed. This paper will challenge the believe that the Northeastern Horse was originated from three well known breeds: Garrano, Sorraia, and Barb. This study indicates
that the pony Garrano did not contribute to the genetic makeup of the horses that formed the Northeastern horse breed.
Keywords
Northeastern Horse, native horse of Brazil, and autochthonous breeds.
