Wagner mercenaries' chief exiled to Belarus after revolt; does mutiny point to Putin's grip on power loosening?

Amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently faced a major mutiny.
Led by the Wagner Group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, this private military company occupied the command center for all Russian forces on Ukrainian soil and advanced to Moscow.
To Putin's relief, the mutiny ended as Prigozhin announced a deal brokered by the Belarusian President.
However, the series of events has left Putin looking weak, and many are expecting this to be advantageous to Ukraine.
For an in-depth analysis of Prigozhin's insurrection and its impact, we invite Professor Shin Sang-hyup from Kyung Hee University and Hanna Hopko, co-founder of the International Centre for Ukrainian Victory, who was also the head of the foreign affairs committee for the Ukrainian Parliament.


(SHIN) Q1. Before we talk about the Wagner chief's short-lived mutiny over the weekend, what exactly is this private military group "Wagner"? What ties did it have to the Russian leadership?

(SHIN) Q2. What was behind the Wagner chief's decision to launch an insurrection?

(HOPKO) Q3. Prigozhin's Wagner forces were never going to be a match for the Russian security forces in the first place, but isn't the fact that his men were able to advance on Moscow surprising? How did you see the progress Prigozhin was able to make?

(SHIN) Q4. Dubbed "Europe's last dictator", Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko was the one who brokered a deal with Yevgeny Prigozhin to stop marching on Moscow. Who is he to broker this deal?

(HOPKO) Q5. What were the details of the deal? The agreement raised many questions. What are they?

(SHIN) Q6. The mutiny itself erupted and receded within just 24 hours, but many say the consequences of this short-lived mutiny will reverberate for much longer. Many media outlets are saying this incident shows Putin's grip on power is weakening. What impact did this incident have in terms of Putin's power?

(HOPKO) Q7. Some watchers point to cracks beginning to show in Putin's rule. How is this in any way going to affect the Ukrainian war? Could Ukraine see this as an opportunity to take advantage of?

(SHIN) Q8. When the revolt took place, many turned their eyes to potential responses from other authoritarian states such as China and North Korea, given their close ties to Russia. What impact would this insurrection have had on these other countries?

(HOPKO) Q9. Meanwhile though the war continues, Ukraine is already planning for its future after the war and is urging for investment. Why is it important to start discussions over rebuilding the country now and what do you believe Ukraine needs the most for its recovery?

(SHIN) Q10. Though Zelenskyy is seeking an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO, NATO is showing hesitance in allowing Ukraine to join the alliance. What is the reason behind this?
