🚨 Freightliner Truck Leads 30‑Mile Pursuit on I‑55 — Jefferson & Ste. Genevieve Counties (Jan. 11, 2024)

Troopers received multiple 911 calls about a careless and imprudent driver barreling south on I‑55 in a Freightliner flatbed truck. At 10:20 AM, Cpl. Magnan spotted the truck near the 176‑mile marker, watching it make unsafe lane changes, tailgate other vehicles, and swerve across both shoulders.

The driver — later identified as John Joseph Clawson — refused to stop, accelerating to 80 mph and weaving through traffic. Clawson repeatedly looked back at the patrol car in his mirror, confirming he knew he was being stopped.

The pursuit continued for 25 minutes and nearly 30 miles, crossing into Ste. Genevieve County. During the chase, Clawson:

Swerved toward a black SUV on the shoulder, forcing it into the grass to avoid being hit
Passed vehicles on the shoulder
Drove from shoulder to shoulder at highway speeds
Continued fleeing even after troopers successfully spiked his front tires at Exit 154

Despite both front tires deflating, Clawson kept driving 70–80 mph until he lost control near the 145‑mile marker, striking the cable median barrier and destroying six posts before coming to a stop.

Clawson exited the truck and was taken into custody. He initially gave a false name but was later identified through fingerprints. Troopers discovered he had a suspended license and an active felony warrant for drug offenses.
Clawson showed signs of drug impairment, and after refusing to answer during implied consent, troopers obtained a blood‑draw warrant.
