Bangladesh Chief Justice Resigns After Protesters' Ultimatum, Hasina's Son Insists "She Is Still PM"

The Chief Justice of Bangladesh's top court has stepped down from his post in the face of protests by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Obaidul Hassan said he had agreed to resign "in principle" after an ultimatum from the protesters, broadcaster Jamuna TV reported. Sheikh Hasina's son said the former prime minister had not applied for asylum in another country and was keen to return to Bangladesh. According to Wazed, Hasina “never officially resigned”, and asserted that “she is still the prime minister of Bangladesh.” Meanwhile, twin jailbreaks in Bangladesh killed at least 12 inmates and freed hundreds more, officials told AFP on August 10.
