“UE Capability in 5G NR (New Radio) refers to the ability of User Equipment (UE), such as smartphones and IoT devices, to support various network features and functionalities. When a UE connects to a 5G network, it must inform the gNB (5G base station) about its capabilities, including supported frequency bands, Carrier Aggregation (CA), MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), bandwidth, and other key parameters. This information helps the network optimize resource allocation and ensure seamless connectivity based on the UE’s hardware and software capabilities.

The UE Capability Information message is a critical signaling exchange in the RRC (Radio Resource Control) procedure. The network requests this information through an RRC UE Capability Enquiry, and the UE responds with a UE Capability Information message, detailing its supported features. This includes aspects such as dual connectivity (EN-DC), NR-DC, beam management, VoNR (Voice over New Radio), and power-saving features. The network then uses this data to configure the UE efficiently for the best performance.
