1.2 Formal Charges | Organic Chemistry

Chad gives a brief breakdown on how to quickly identify atoms that are likely to have a formal charge in a lewis structure as well as how to quickly calculate the formal charge. Rather than the rather complex formula often given for how to calculate the formal charge of an atom, Chad shows that it more simply can be summarized as Normal Valence electrons minus "dots and lines." He works several examples to demonstrate the simplicity of using this formula to calculate the formal charge of an atom from the lewis structure.
