Saturday August 21st 2021 brought about the rare sight of Merchant Navy Class No.35028 'Clan Line' on a main line rail tour worked by the West Coast Railway Company, something not seen since 2010, when she doubled up with Black 5 No.44932 on a trip around Kent, as a replacement for another Black 5, 45305. Almost exclusively seen on rail tours operated by DB Cargo, this latest run with West Coast was brought about by there simply being no other engine available, and so her owning group, The Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society, were there to kindly provide a helping hand.
The run in question The Railway Touring Company's 'The Cotswold Venturer', running from London Paddington to Worcester and back. This would feature a chance to see the Merchant Navy on rare metals, running out along the Cotswold Main Line and back via Stroud and up the fearsome Sapperton Bank, one day over 9 years on from her last ascent of the climb. This was one to look forward to, and I certainly have!
We kick off the video with a shot of her, the MNLPS's pride and joy, sauntering along the Cotswold Main Line at Lyneham, on the outward, before quickly moving onto the main event; Sapperton! Unfortunately, this steep, twisting climb, on the Swindon to Gloucester line, isn't quite what it used to be and is a rather desolate section, these days, as far as locations go. I ended up back at Jackdaw Bridge, where I had previously filmed Flying Scotsman back in June. She was very nice there. Clan Line, though? In a completely different league, as we were treated to one of the most ferocious ascents of this climb that I've seen for many years, utterly dominating the A3 in every way!
Many thanks must go to the young family next to me, who were very understanding of my requests for a bit of quiet, allowing me to capture that full glorious soundtrack as Clan Line bulldozed her way up towards Sapperton Tunnel.
