Chives, either in the garden or a container, really need to be split to maintain their vigour. Eventually they form a large clump which produces less and less new growth; so this video shows you how easy it is to do this. Just dig them up, split them up into portions and re-plant them. Make sure they are damp before digging them up; as if they are too dry the roots are more easily damaged. Chives are so versatile in cooking and can be added to salads, sauces, stews and garlic butter to name just a few; so they are well worth growing. Even if you have very little garden space and no room to grow onions this herb is a wonderful substitute and takes up very little room.
