Hi, my name is Rebecca and today I’m going to show you how to create a civil 3d surface from gis data. We are going to start an equator where we're going to source the contour information and then we're going to bring it into civil 3d and create a surface. So, starting in equator, I am going to open it up and search for a location. I’m typing in fresh kills which I believe is a landfill in Staten island. I’m not totally sure why I picked this location just looked like interesting topography so here we are. yep, here's the spot I want I’m going to open up the topography menu. make sure that usgs data is selected and then under the export from equator menu. I’m going to pick contours and specify the resolution I want. so, in this case I’m looking for one-meter contours and now I’m selecting the area that I want to export.

Basically, what's going to happen is an email is going to be sent to me with the download link to the data. So, once I get that link, I am basically going to download it and bring it into civil 3d. Under the home menu I am looking for the create ground data section, specifically when you have it open, we're looking to create a surface from gis data. So just give your surface a name. I’m just calling it contour surface here. select the style that you want. I’m gonna pick one meter contours background and then specify shape shapefile is what we're going to be working with. You can navigate to the location of that file. Here I’ve done that and then click on login. I'm not actually sure why it says login because you don't actually have to put in any credentials um but that seems to be a critical step. and then this last menu here you're going to want to make sure that you've mapped the elevation parameter to the right elevation um attribute in civil 3d.

Once you're done hit ok and your surface will generate. Here it is so that was easy. Here are my contours you can clearly see the definition on this landfill area here and as i zoom in I’m getting a pretty good indication of what the surface looks like.
