Since 1975, film fans have tried to decode the meanings of Peter Weir’s ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’. In outtakes donated to the National Film and Sound Archive by Martin Sharp, who collaborated with Weir on the shoot, we see footage from the original ending – which only deepens the mystery.

After the death of Sara, a student she had cruelly oppressed, the Head of Appleyard College gravitates to the Rock and climbs the path taken by the vanished girls. Eventually, she is confronted by Sara, dressed in mystical white against the crags of the Rock, savouring her power over the broken headmistress.
