According to Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal, the state is reeling under an unprecedented financial crisis and attributed the “distorted” financial policies of the Centre, the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic and recurring natural disasters as the reason for the poor economic condition. He said that the Centre has reduced the revenue deficit grant to the state by Rs 6,716 crore compared to the previous financial year. He also blamed the implementation of the GST, delayed distribution of GST compensation, and cuts in the borrowing limit of the state by the union government for the fiscal crunch.

However, the Centre has denied the allegations and accused the state government of being extravagant and mismanaging the finances. Union Minister V Muraleedharan stated that Kerala is facing the economic crisis owing to the lavish spending of the Pinarayi-led state government. He claimed that the Centre has transferred funds in all eligible instances, but the state failed to meet deadlines and adhere to norms.

Meanwhile, the state government has launched a program called Keraleeyam 2023, which is an annual event designed to showcase the world-class features of Kerala to the global community. The program, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on the 67th formation day of Kerala, features discussions on Kerala’s achievements, challenges faced across various sectors, and future prospects. It also includes exhibitions highlighting the state’s unique resources, cultural heritage, agro-industrial progress, and technological accomplishments.

However, some critics have questioned the need and relevance of such a program at a time when the state is facing a financial crisis and struggling to provide basic services and relief to the people. They have accused the state government of wasting money and resources to boost its image and divert attention from the real issues.

In this podcast, we will explore the various aspects of the economic crisis in Kerala and the Keraleeyam program. We will also hear from experts, activists, and citizens about their views and opinions on these matters. Stay tuned for more.
