Gouranga Bolite Habe गौरांग बोलीते हबे

This song was sung by Narottama dasa Thakura, a great devotee and acarya in the Gaudiya Vaishnavasampradaya, the disciplic succession coming down from Lord Caitanya. Narottama dasa Thakura has written many songs, which are recognized as authoritative by all Vaishnavas. He has sung these songs in simple Bengali language, but the purport—the deep meaning of his songs—is very significant. In this song he says, ‘gauranga’ bolite habe pulaka sarira. One has attained the perfection of chanting when as soon as he chants the name of Lord Gauranga, who initiated this sankirtana movement, at once there is shivering in his body.

‘hari hari’ bolite nayane ba’ be near

Translation:

(1) When will that opportune moment come to me when there will be shivering of the body as soon as I chant Lord Gauranga's name? And after the shivering, while chanting Hare Krishna, when will there be tears pouring down from my eyes?

(2) When will that day come when Lord Nityananda's causeless mercy is bestowed upon me so that my desire for material enjoyment becomes very insignificant?

(3) When my mind is completely purified, being freed from material anxieties and desires, then I shall be able to understand Vrindavana and the conjugal love of Radha and Krishna, and then my spiritual life will be successful.

(4) When shall I be very much eager to study the books left by the six Gosvamis? One has to learn of the conjugal loving affairs of Radha-Krishna through the teachings of these six Gosvamis.

(5) Narottama dasa always wishes to understand this conjugal love under the direction of the six Gosvamis.

‘गौरांङ्ग’ बलिते ह’बे पुलक-शरीर।
‘हरि हरि’ बलिते नयने ब’बे नीर॥1॥
आर क’बे निताईचाँदेर करुणा हइबे।
संसार-वासना मोर कबे तुच्छ हबे॥2॥
विषय छाड़िया कबे शुद्ध हबे मन।
कबे हाम हेरब श्रीवृन्दावन॥3॥
रूप-रघुनाथ-पदे हइबे आकुति।
कबे हाम बुझब से युगल पिरीति॥4॥
रूप-रघुनाथ-पदे रहु मोर आश।
प्रार्थना करये सदा नरोत्तमदास॥5॥

अर्थ
(1) वह दिन कब आयेगा कि केवल ‘श्रीगौरांङ्ग’ नाम के उच्चारण मात्र से मेरा शरीर रोमांचित हो उठेगा? कब, ‘हरि हरि’ के उच्चारण से मेरे नेत्रों से प्रेमाश्रु बह निकलेंगे?
(2) कब श्रीनित्यानंद प्रभु मुझ पर अपनी कृपावर्षा करेंगे, कि जिससे मेरी समस्त भौतिक भोग की इच्छायें तुच्छ हो जायेंगी।
(3) कब मेरा मन भौतिक सुख के विषयों को त्यागकर निर्मल होगा? कब मैं श्रीवृन्दावन धाम का वास्तविक दर्शन कर पाऊँगा।
(4) श्रीरूप-रघुनाथ गोस्वामी (षड्‌गोस्वामीवृन्द) के चरण-दर्शन के लिए कब मैं वयाकुल हो उठूँगा। कब मैं श्रीश्री राधा-कृष्ण के दिवय प्रेम-वयापार को समझने में समर्थ हो सकूँगा।
(5) श्रील नरोत्तमदास ठाकुर सदा यही प्रार्थना करते हैं ‘‘श्रील रूपगोस्वामी-श्रील रघुनाथदास गोस्वामी के चरणों में मेरी सदा आशा बनी रहे। ’’
