You can use your phone on a ship, but here's why you shouldn't (plus a secret tip for free texting while on board)🌊

Cruise ships have something called "cellular at sea" - it's a maritime network and can cost as much as £20 per MB, meaning it could cost you hundreds to download a single email. Turning airplane mode on when you leave port could save you a HUGE phone bill 💰

There are a few ways around it though...

First of all, you can just buy a wifi package. It's expensive, but if you need to stay connected it's the cheapest option. Some cruise lines sell a bundle (like Princess Cruises) which gives you drinks as well as wifi. Others charge you per day, and some per MB 📶

The alternative is to only use your phone in port and keep it on airplane mode the rest of the time. There is a sneaky trick for iPhone users though...

If you have an iPhone, turn on iMessages while you're in port (it needs internet access to be set up). Once it's turned on, your messages with other iPhone users will go blue. Connect to the on board WiFi without buying a package and don't sign in if it asks, and you might find you're able to send iMessages without paying for internet. I have no idea how this works, and it doesn't work on all cruise lines, but it's a great little hack! So far I've seen it work on Royal Caribbean, Ambassador and Celebrity. It doesn't work on P&O or MSC - I'm not sure about others 🚢
