The Unofficial Campus Orientation | University of Dundee Walking Tour

Описание к видео The Unofficial Campus Orientation | University of Dundee Walking Tour

Join me for a wee wander round Dundee University campus & lets get orientated! Whether you're moving to Dundee soon, or you just fancy a nosey, it's my pleasure to show you the sights.

Dundee is a city on the East coast of Scotland, just an hour north of Edinburgh. It's well connected, but the city itself is very walkable and car friendly if you're wanting to bring your car to uni (i'll point out parking spots later on in the video). In the city of Dundee, there are two universities. University of Dundee (most famous for life sciences) and Abertay (most famous for video games).

I start this video down at the train station at the waterfront. The V&A design museum and the Discovery Antarctic expedition boat and then we head up towards campus. To set your bearings, the river Tay sits to the south, and the Law hill sits to the north. If you're ever lost on campus, first of all, use google maps or ask a friendly stranger, but failing that, north is usually uphill, and south is usually downhill. Easy peasy.

The Dundee Uni campus itself isn't too big. Maximum 10 minute walk between classes. I've added wee annotated google maps into the video to help you out. But you should be able to spot the campus on a map easy enough because its encircled by main roads. Perth Road, the high street, straight along the bottom; and Hawkhill, the dual-carriageway, curving round the north side. And yes, Hawkhill is a wee hill too. North side = uphill remember.

We walk round in a wee figure of eight, pointing out everywhere you'll need to know:

I can only imagine the uncertainty and extra anxiety that coronavirus is causing to everyone moving to uni this year. It's not what you imagined, it's not what you signed up for, but hopefully you will have a wonderful undergrad or postgrad experience. I know nightclubs are closed, and house parties (over 15 people, max 3 households) are literally illegal right now (August 2020). So freshers week will not be as normal. Far from it. I could just give a hug to everyone who's not able to experience what they imagined (for now anyway). But there will be friends to make, and fun to have. Quarantine with flatmates might be the most thorough "get to know me session" one could imagine.

If anyone IS QUARANTINING, I've added some info that you may find useful. Groceries can be ordered to your door from groceries.ASDA.com. Choose a time slot (book early & you can amend your order until 10pm the day before). Also, the uni has a free streaming service learningonscreen.ac.uk/ondemand so you can watch everything that's ever played on UK TV. Worth a nosey for sure (quarantine or not).

If anyone is looking for COVID advice, the Scottish Government do a daily update at 12.15 (Monday-Friday) live on twitter.com/scotgov, or on the telly. Or you can have a look into the stats/guidance at gov.scot. A summary of the rules in Scotland right now (Aug 2020): FACTS
F- face coverings in busses/shops/indoors enclosed spaces are mandatory
A- Avoid crowded places... like the plague
C- clean your hands & hard surfaces regularly
T- Two meters distance from folk you don't live with
S- book a test if you have ANY symptoms (new continuous cough, fever, loss of or change in taste/smell)

There are multiple events that run yearly at UoD, like the zombie apocalypse charity day, Holi festival of colours, re-freshers week in January, Halloween, St Patricks day 17th March, the carpark rave (November ish?). Every so often the uni has alpaca petting days (summer time), guide dog petting days (exam time), bouncy castle assault courses /sumo wrestling, outdoor movie screenings. Student life is pretty sweet sometimes.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Nobody reads the video description anyway. I truly hope you love student life in Dundee as much as I have. Safe travels here. Bring ear plugs, tupperware, a door wedge and bring your mask. Don't feed the seagulls. *inhale*. *exhale*. You got this.
