Modifying brand new cars can be tricky due to the time it can take aftermarket software companies to reverse engineer electronics that are only getting more and more intricate. In the case of the Honda Civic Type R though this is no longer the case as MoTeC have released a plug and play ECU (based on their M1 platform) which gives owners/tuners the ability to modify to their heart's content.
