Here is a nice and easy tutorial on how to copy nearly any image using the pen tool in Inkscape. It's all about roughing in your design and going in after to adjust any nodes to get the path just right.
The video shows 3 different levels of difficulty ranging from just clicking and placing nodes to adjusting paths, using the auto smooth tool, deleting and adding nodes when needed and colouring.
