The controversy has intensified after New York City’s new mayor Zohran Mamdani earlier sent a handwritten letter to Umar Khalid in jail, expressing solidarity and support for his family. The issue has reignited a sharp political debate over foreign interference, national sovereignty, and the handling of sensitive internal security cases.
