They are one of the easiest hydrangeas to prune since they bloom on new wood. Pruning in late winter or early spring before the new leaves emerge helps shape the plant, encourages strong new growth, and ensures bigger, better-supported blooms for the season ahead.

To start make sure to locate healthy, thick stems from last year’s growth. Count 2 to 4 nodes (leaf buds) from the base of the new growth. These nodes are where new branches will form. Cut just above the highest node you choose using sharp, clean pruners. This method is an easy way to remove about one-third of the total plant height. Cutting this way also encourages sturdy stems that can hold up big blooms without flopping.

Next look for thin, spindly branches—these won’t produce strong blooms and should be cut at the base. This will ensure that the plant’s energy goes into producing stronger stems and larger blooms.

Remove any crossing branches to prevent rubbing and damage. This will improve air flow and reduce the risk of disease.

Make sure when you’re done that you step back and assess the shape. Aim for a balanced, rounded form. A well-shaped hydrangea not only looks better but also produces fuller blooms.
