Description

The gray-headed woodpecker, also known as the gray-faced woodpecker is a Eurasian species in the Picidae family. As the name suggests, it has a pale gray head. It is a similar gray below and olive-green above with black and white barring on the primaries.

It has black lores and facial stripes resembling a mustache and black markings on the head and nape. Females are similar but lack the red forecrown. There are ten recognized subspecies with variations in color and distribution.

Vocalizations: Call and song

In addition to the drumming typical of woodpeckers, they produce a range of different vocalizations. Calls include a single-note or sharp, repetitive kuek or kek.

Distribution and habitat

Gray-headed woodpeckers occupy a wide range across Palearctic Europe and Asia. They inhabit old mixed coniferous forests with plenty of dead trees.

Diet and feeding habits

They feed mainly on wood ants and termites, but also eat caterpillars, spiders, crickets, beetle larvae, flies, and other small invertebrates. Their winter diet includes plant foods such as fruits, nuts, and berries.

Nesting and breeding

Gray-headed woodpeckers nest in tree holes that they excavate in dead, damaged, or decaying trees. The breeding season is around May. Females lay up to ten eggs, and incubation lasts about 16 days. The nestlings are cared for by both parents and fledge at around 25 days.

Status and conservation

The main threat to the species is the destruction of old forests. Despite a decline in global population numbers, the species appears to be safe and is classified as “least concern” by the IUCN.
