Should we be polluting the environment more — to understand it better and, ultimately, pollute it less? This talk explores a holistic approach to science, explaining freshwater research that focuses on whole ecosystems and studies the impacts that we humans are having on our fresh water. It also makes the case for more big-picture science that can teach us how best to protect the fresh water on which we all depend. Pauline Gerrard is a passionate freshwater conservationist and science communicator. As Interim Executive Director of IISD Experimental Lakes Area, she has dedicated her career to understanding and protecting freshwater habitats across Canada, Europe and Southeast Asia. Pauline's expertise spans local to international water management, making her a leading voice in freshwater ecology and conservation. Pauline loves to spend time canoeing across lakes and critter dipping for bugs in ponds and wetlands. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
