At least 8 people were killed and 18 injured when a car exploded near the historic Red Fort in Delhi on Monday.

Witnesses described a large blast in the Old Delhi quarter of the Indian capital, which set fire to several other cars, motorbikes and auto-rickshaws that were close to the vehicle.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear, but the scale of the incident and the fact that National Investigation Agency and the National Security Guard — both counterterrorism forces — joined Delhi police at the scene suggested that it was being investigated as a possible terror attack. Another possibility is that a car fuelled by CNG (compressed natural gas) might have exploded.
