In this video I make the marble pictured in the thumbnail using gold and silver fume.

For those of you not familiar with lampworking, I have a very small piece of silver on my fuming rod, hence the time I take fuming with silver. Usually the silver takes very little exposure.

You will be able to get a fairly good idea of what happens, although with the current camera setup I have, I cannot get the up-close view in the flame. That being said, if I describe it briefly you will see when these things happen:

-First I start with a clear bubble, relatively thin.
-I then add some fume, which is a very fine layer of gold and then silver onto the bubble by vaporizing it in the flame. You will see me hold the tip of a rod in the flame in front of the bubble, these rods have the gold and silver on them.
-Next, I cover the bubble in dots of clear glass, encasing the fume between the layers of glass.
-Then comes the actual “implosion” part, wherein I melt the bubble down to a thicker puck on the end of my tube. The angles that I hold the bubble during this process will effect the end result. As the bubble condenses and becomes smaller in diameter, the fume trapped under the dots will sink in and create a 3d effect. It is important to notice that the volume of glass never changes after I am done placing the dots until I remove the excess tube. Therefore, as I change the shape of the work from a wide diameter and thin wall to a small diameter, the glass will become much thicker.
-The next step is to remove the excess tube and clean up the sides by removing glass until I have an even circle.
-Then I will continue to heat the now solid piece to a more round shape, switch sides with my handle, and use a color called “mystery aventurine” to do what is called “backing a marble” or to place a dark color behind the implosion to help show off the lighter colors of the fume.
-I stretch it out a little to give it a twist, and then heat it up and begin shaping in my marble mold.
-After changing the side my handle is on a few times to smooth out the entire surface, I will remove the handle and “flame polish” the mark that my handle left, and it is complete!
