Presented By: Heather Nelson, PhD

Speaker Biography: Dr. Heather Nelson is in her final year of a clinical chemistry fellowship at ARUP laboratories and University of Utah health. At ARUP she is serving as Acting Medical director in the Automated Core laboratory. In 2018, she earned her PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology from SUNY Upstate Medical University. Upon completing her PhD, she pursued a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where her research focused on understanding the underlying mechanisms leading to human islet dysfunction and diabetes. During her postdoctoral research, Heather helped develop a microfluidic platform that allowed the lab to simultaneously measure hormone secretory profiles and intracellular signaling events from human islets. It is from her work with this microfluidic platform that Heather developed an interest in Lab-on-a-Chip technology and how it is being applied in clinical diagnostics.

Webinar: An Introduction to Lab-on-a-Chip Technology in Clinical Diagnostics: Successes and Remaining Challenges

Webinar Abstract: Lab-on-a-chip platforms enable advanced processing, manipulation, and analysis of biological samples in miniaturized fluidic devices. Despite the numerous advantages, such as lower reagent and sample volumes, reduced cost, and faster time to result, several hurdles must be overcome to continue to grow and advance this technology in clinical diagnostics. This presentation will include a discussion of (1) the main technologies in the field of lab-on-a-chip platforms for medical diagnostics, (2) advantages and disadvantages of lab-on-a-chip technology in the clinical laboratory, and (3) current commercialized point-of-care devices utilizing lab-on-a-chip technology. The session will conclude by highlighting some future challenges the field will need to address as lab-on-a-chip technology is expanded.
