Asterix for the Sega Master System was one of those games that I really, really wanted as a kid, mainly because my friends had it. I was a big Asterix fan and unfortunately I could only find the sequel. Fasttrack twenty years later and I have managed to find all three of the Master System trilogy with 'The Secret Mission and Great Rescue being the other two games.

Set in 50BC France (Gaul) during the period of Roman occupation, Asterix is a 2D platformer based off of the popular French comic book character. It sees sees Asterix and best friend Obelix having to rescue the druid Getafix from the pesky Romans. You can play as either of the two Gauls, however depending on which you play as, the level is completely different. Asterix is much smaller and can access shorter corridors but requires magical potions in order to smash blocks, whilst obelix is much larger (and therefore is more liable to hit the traps along the way) has superhuman strength and can therefore smash blocks with his bare hands. You'll want to do this regularly as the title is fairly difficult and if you're stuck on a section, just swap characters and try the other level.

This is one of the best platformers on the Sega Master System and is actually the best of the three Asterix games. With colourful visuals, solid game play, cool music and excellent level design, this is surely one which all Master System fans should have in their collections.
